Im almost 19. Since I was a little seven year old girl, my dad started a small business. Ive basically been raised here (no joke–cant tell you how many times as a little kid I helped pour concrete, fell asleep in the lobby waiting for mom to get done with work, ate my dinner in the chair, Ive seriously spent a ton of time here.)
When I was 11, my dad thought it would be a nice idea to start training me to work the front desk. So at age 11 I started working every few weeks, learning credit machines, computers, etc.
By the age of 13, whenever someone was sick or had time off or holiday and he’d forgotten..i’d get drug out of bed unexpectedly and brought to work.
By 14 I was staffed regularly on the schedule at about 10 hrs a week.
By 16 I worked two days a week. Ive been working that ever since as Ive went thru High school.
Now, for the summer, Ive been working 40-50 hr weeks (emergency response vehicles are staffed here due to a fire, and someone needs to be here.). I get up early in the morning, generally stay longer than Im scheduled. I also got trained this summer for outdoor as well (we service airplanes: I now can fuel planes, check fuel, drive fueltrucks, etc) as well as the indoor stuff Ive been doing (credit card machines, ring ppl up, make hotel and flight reservations, answer phones, batch and reconcile computer system,e tc). Sometimes I wont even clock in because..well, I dont do it for money. I do it because it needs doing, and my parents dont need to pay me constantly. they dont ahve that much money.
Anyways, I pretty much had a breakdown yesterday and went home, and my dad wasnt sure if i was gonna come back to work (thing about working for family..you can get screamed at more, payed less, and temporarily fired till they want you back).
Our book keeper today said something to me, she’s like, "Yeah, well, maybe you should get some real world. I mean, working for parents is kind of weird." Im not really sure how to take that comment. Im not telling anyone..but i feel like kinda..dumb?
Do you think it’s bad I work for my parents?
No not at all. Its a way to gain great experience. Which it sounds like you’ve gained a ton! Although you are right about getting screwed. You may have worked hard, but you’ll be very well prepared when you decide its time for you to branch out. Plus you helped your family when they needed it. That’s a great thing to do. Just make sure you do what you want to do, not what someone else tells you to do.
