Smashmouth – Walking on the Sun
So not long ago, while on vacation in Morocco with my lovely and talented wife, Caroline, I was listening to one of my my favorite songs, Walking On The Sun, and thought about how much it resonated with the current political climate in the world. I had always been unhappy with the music video produced by the record company. It sacrificed what the song was really about for dancing Bikini babes. It was kinda sad.
So, one hot afternoon, I was on the back of the camel moving though the Sahara desert and the song was playing on my ipod and I was thinking, yes, this is a perfect metaphor for the song – a hot lifeless desert. I started telling Caroline about my observation and she was like, “we’re here. Why don’t you shoot a little music video of your own oif it means that much to you.”
We downloaded the lyrics at an internet cafe and went all over Morocco shooting this music video. We used nothing more than our Ipods (which you can see in many of the shots) and my little Sony video camera HC3 set up on a tripod. What resulted was some great fun, not so much because we got to be rock stars for a day, but because everywhere we went people loved what we were doing. And that is the point. There is so much goodwill in the world among regular folks. It needs to be amped up to keep us from blowing ourselves up. We can’t let hate hijack our good relations.
For you travel buffs, the desert scenes were shot in the Sahara desert near Algeria. Our good friend Ali Seggaou at Hotel Merzouga in the village of Merzouga arranged our camel trek with Hassan the dancing camel driver you see in the video. The beach scenes were filmed in Essaouira. We also filmed in Marrakech, Casablanca, Fez, Meknes, and the village of Ait Ben Haddou which was one of the locations for Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator.” Enjoy!
